The Design Cycle / Research & Development

                                       Research, Research, Research

The research that you do fits the ‘Design Cycle Model’ this is a cyclic event where continual evaluation takes place.
You may start with the ‘Design Stage’ and plan what you wish to explore based on inspirations from your research. Then the idea will enter the ‘Development Stage’ where the whole concept, theme, resources and equipment required will be considered.
The ‘Implementation Stage’ is where the actual photography will take place in a practical way. And the ‘Analysis Stage’ is where you can reflect back on how well the outcome has met the initial thoughts and ideas.

All the way through all of these stages you will be continually evaluating how well your project is evolving. This takes the form of a reflective process where you will consider what went well, what you think needs improving and what you would do differently next time. The areas identified can then be rectified, and so you will go round the cycle again repeating the same process hopefully in an upward spiral raising the level of your work each time.
The whole point of research is to examine the images of photographers who are renowned in their own particular field or genre. The analysis or deconstruction of these images is very valuable and will enable you to add value to your own work.
The main key words you can use to identify the value from the photographs are;

Composition, Colour, Shapes, Patterns, Lines, Tonal Range, Frames, Rule of thirds, Texture, Form, Focal Point, Perspective, Scale,  Denotation, Connotation, (literal and implied meanings).

For 'example' for a portrait photography theme the research area could start with;

Working in your blogger, determine and identify useful information, i.e. subject matter on the theme for study, examples of suggested and personally chosen artists, your own photographs.  Analyse, organise and manipulate your research, i.e. evidence of development of ideas - visual thinking, through studies and exploration and experimentation with media and ideas.   Some artists you may wish to refer to are: Rembrandt, Steve Pyke, Annie Liebovitz, Tom hunter, Richard Avedon, Julia Margaret Cameron, Josef Karsh, Sarah Jones, Edward Steichen, David Bailey, Arnold Newman, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Rankin, Nadav Kander

Or for street photography you may wish to research and critically analyse the following;

Some artists you may wish to refer to are: Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long, Kurt Schwitters,  Callum Colvin, Marcel Duchamp, Christo, Mari Mahr, John Blakemore, Joseph Cornell, Max Ernst, Henri Matisse, David Hockney, John Piper, Elizabeth Frink, Damien Hirst, and Tracey Emin. www.artistsbooks.com    www.aragopress.arago.co.uk

Or,
Collect and evaluate relevant examples of black and white photography.  Examine the work of some of the following photographers and artists:
Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Ralph Gibson, Ansel Adams, Aaron Siskind, Minor White, Walker Evans, Don McCullin, Chris Killip… www.pbs.org/art21/artists/mann  http://masters-of-photography.com/

Research is to help inform and inspire in your chosen area of photography and you should identify what is you like about the images and how you can add that value to your own work.
The research needs to come from magazines, books, the internet , the library or from an exhibition you may of seen. It may be you have been watching a series on photography on telly, or a guest speaker at an event. You need to reference where this information has come from and put links on your blog where required.

All students are required to research the work of a minimum of 5 photographers. From these you must collate at least 10 photographs and evidenced these in your blog . For each photographer you are required to write a minimum of 500 words– for level 3. All of this written work needs to be free written by yourself and not cut and paste (plagiarism). This word count may be spread across several blogs and thus be met in smaller pieces of written evidence.

Research leads - to start you off.....

Assignment Brief:
This assignment is one that will run over the year and rotate with a total of 3 groups. The subjects covered will be based around the following;

                         1.Photography (& Photoshop), 2. Film making, 3. Blog Website,

                                                        BRIEF : BAND IDENTITY

The brief you must respond to requires you to produce the Branding, Advertising and Marketing material for a band of any musical genre of your choice. You are required to produce;

                                       Website, Promo Video and Photographs

This will include graphic design and photography that can form the basis of your advertising and marketing. Alongside this you are required to produce a promo video to accompany this. Finally you are required to design and launch a website to market the band

                                                                       Stages:

  1. Concept and Design Process. Where both Graphic Designer and Photographer work together in groups. Here the ‘Branding and Marketing Concepts’ can be discussed. Also the Graphic Designer and Photographer have to be able to work well alongside each other and fit to the brief. This stage is also underpinned with extensive research.

  1. Development Stage. Where the actual photography takes place either digitally or on film. Also the graphic design takes shape and works in close collaboration. (Refer to the two Unit

content sheets for the full range of options). Also the students need to collaborate on the      production of a ‘Promo Video’, its filming and editing. The design and photography /
software must be used in conjunction to create a group outcome of a high post - production standard.

  1. Implementation Stage. Where the actual work becomes ‘live’ on the website that the students create using the Blogger website. The photography / design go onto the website along with the promo video they have made.

  1. Analysis Stage. Where the students have the ability to reflect on the effectiveness of not only their own work but that of the other groups. This will take the form of linked blog sites, which can comment freely on each others work. This will allow ongoing tutor and peer feedback across the group. The formative feedback will allow time to adapt and change to the response of the audience (other students), and will be ongoing. This can then cycle back to the beginning to allow the adaptation and implementation of changes. This will also be used as an ongoing critique of all work produced.

In this assignment you will develop an understanding of the importance of using the appropriate methods to achieve their creative intentions. They will develop ideas and focus concepts within the confines of specific briefs. They will learn to communicate their ideas and intentions professionally, through visual and verbal communication and the consultation process.

You will develop the necessary research and analysis, synthesis, and time management skills, as well as teamwork and organisational skills. You will be introduced to the ‘Design Development Cycle’ through theory and practice.
Also you will need to be aware of legal constraints, such as copyright, building regulations and health and safety issues associated with specific materials, techniques and practices, which impact on your proposals.
Also you will be encouraged to investigate a range of different photographic materials, media, techniques and associated technologies. Emphasis will be on practical exploration, with you working through as wide a range of media as possible. In working directly with materials and processes you  will be able to form responses and reach conclusions about the characteristics and properties of photographic media. This will help them choose working practices that are appropriate to their intentions, and that best suit their creative interests. You will be taught how to use equipment and materials safely.
All students need to keep a record of all relevant Health and Safety guidance and to show an awareness of legislation that applies to activities in this area. This brief also offers the opportunity for you to explore the similarities and differences between film-based and digital photography. You will be able to use film single lens reflex and digital single lens reflex (SLR and DSLR) cameras to experience the similarities between the two types, such as exposure control and interchangeable lenses. You may also be able to experience the differences by processing and printing film-based black and white photographic images, and comparing this with downloading digital-based imagery and using image manipulation software to produce images.

As you progress through the unit you must continually evaluate and analyse your working practice. You will need to describe the properties and working characteristics of the photographic media that you have used and explored. And review work in terms of the visual impact of any final piece/s, use of techniques, and other relevant aspects such as adherence to health and safety guidelines. This will provide an opportunity for you to gain valuable insights into photographic media and techniques, and form conclusions about their preferences in photography.

Research:
During this assignment you are expected to research the work of other photographers and artists. In doing this you are required to record and evidence what you find in text, images, audio and videos which are relevant to the theme or genre of photography you choose. You will be given advice and guidance into photographers and artists to research.
This research is all recorded in an online blog you need to visit www.blogger.com. This way of working will be fully explained and guidance will be provided throughout the course. Working online

will allow you to supplement your work both at and away from college.
The blog is a form of self evaluation which is ongoing and allows you to evidence everything that you see and do. Evaluations should take place all the time in the form of reflective practice, which allows you to improve and to raise your level of achievement. Evidence is the key word in that this must be present as proof of meeting the criteria,
To help with research there is an attached sheet with lists covering most of the areas required, this is only a starting point and as such will lead you to discover more.

Materials:
All students are encouraged to work online via the Blogger. However some may choose to work via a sketchbook or indeed a combination of the two. All students will need a memory stick to allow all data / work to be transferable.
Also you will be encouraged to investigate a range of different photographic materials, media, techniques and associated technologies. Emphasis will be on practical exploration, with you working through as wide a range of media as possible.
The assignment gives you and your group the opportunity to explore all areas of visual communication, including mind mapping, concept sketches, experimental and scale modeling, proofs, mood boards, colour / sample boards and final presentations.

Required for Assessment:
All students are required to research the work of a minimum of 10 photographers and 10 artists. From these you must collate at least 10 photographs and 5 videos from each and evidenced these in your blog. For each photographer you are required to write a minimum of 250 words.

One website which will contain all the relevant student work. (Graphic Design, Photography, and a Promo Video). The same website will have the content for both development and implementation.
For all of your work you are required to clearly evidence ALL of the following stages as listed on the unit content sheet attached.

Each student in each team will be required to produce;
  1. A blogger website – ongoing self evaluations / feedback / criteria tracking.
  2. A photo shoot of band / solo artist – 1 studio / 1 location (10, A4 or 10x10 inch 300dpi off each).
  3. A range of marketing / advertising material inc, 4 cd covers, 2 A4 poster / magazine cover,       1 website.
  4. A logo for your band or artist( identity to suit genre chosen).
  5. A promo video, to include possible use of departmental resources, dancers, musicians etc or more simply the use of flip books and still images. Video can be mimed / synced or original music/audio.
  6. Creative use of props and fashion appropriate to video shoot.
  7. The video is a team effort and will require input and documentation from all students in each team. (ie 1 video from each group approx 3 mins duration).
  8. Editing and post production to include chosen audio track.
  9. Creative use of photoshop throughout all marketing / advertising material.

Assessment Method:
All learning aims and expected outcomes will be clearly indicated and followed in the delivery program. Refer to grading criteria chart attached.

Assessment and Grading: Refer to grading criteria chart attached. And also on this website.

Units 7 and 23 Criteria to target

UNIT 7

UNIT 23
When tracking your criteria I suggest that you label your blogs such as

 UNIT 7 P1

or,

UNIT 23 M4

For example and the computer will stack the labels in a way that will make sense to you to aid targeting and tracking .
This label system will allow you to  'flag' what criteria you want to try to claim for, it is then up to the tutors to advise as to whether this is the case or whether you need to do more before it is finally marked.
This allows you time to improve your grade before final marking, and let you hopefully achieve higher grades throughout this assignment.

Blogger - How to use guide

                                           What should I be doing?

You need to have printed out your selected units and attached them to the assignment paper. You should have these with you in every session so you can clearly see what you need to be doing. From the City and Guilds website you need to download the Qualification Handbook and select the units you would like to do. You need to discuss with the tutor to see if the ones you have chosen are correct and will fit into the Guided Learning Hours (GLH) which are shown alongside each course.
With 16 weeks and 3 hours contact time at college you will have a total of 48 hours, any hours above and beyond this is where you need to be working taking photographs / other work towards this qualification on your own.
You must take responsibility and ownership of your chosen units and the study time you apply to this in order to achieve a high grade.

                                                       The Blogger site
Set up guidance given previously in early sessions.(see me if any problems in creating and account, etc..). Chose from the menus the style and look of your site to suit you from the template designer in the design tab.

You should have set up your blog site by now and you need to be making entries to include the following;

  1. Research of photographers in your chosen area to include images that you like and inspire you.
  2. You need to copy images onto your desktop from the internet and then open a new blog and insert the image into it by navigating to your desktop and selecting it.
  3. Compare and contrast your work to research.
  4. Have an evaluation blog entry of how well you have done, reflect back on what went well, or badly and how you would improve your work for next time.
  5. Full range of kit used and how well your selection suited your subject.

By selecting images to look at you can start to write about what it is you like about them.
For this you will need to include the following words to analyse the images you have chosen,

Composition, Colour, Shapes, Patterns, Lines, Tonal Range, Frames, Rule of thirds, Texture, Form, Focal Point and Perspective. Denotation and Connotation (literal and implied meanings).

These are words that will help you to talk about each of the images you choose to analyse and there may be others you add for yourselves.

Title each blog entry and you then need to add a label into the bottom right box called labels

The labels you add are to aid you to track what criteria you are meeting (reference the criteria example handout from last week). Your criteria that you need to track can be found on the ‘Assessment Pack’ for your unit numbers you have chosen. If you haven’t got this I have a copy I can give you .
You must ensure in the design tab on the blogger you have to add a gadget called LABELS which will then allow you to stack up each criteria with the number of times you FLAG it in brackets. This will be done automatically by the computer .

For this course the labels will be P (PASS) , M (MERIT) and D (Distinction) with the relevant number to match your criteria sheets. This way of tracking your work is very beneficial in that you can target criteria and label which ones you meet or need to add more value to obtain a higher grade.

                                                       Research

Research is to help inform and inspire what you do and you should identify what is you like about the images and how you can add that value to your own work.
The research needs to come from magazines, books, the internet, the library or from an exhibition you may of seen. It may be you have been watching a series on photography on telly, or a guest speaker at an event. You need to reference where this has come from and put links on your blog where required.

Your own photography also needs to be uploaded, selecting your images that you want to write about. The written work also needs to be reflective or looking back on what you did, what you feel went well, what kit you used and in what way.
Also what you feel you could do better next time by improving the weak areas, ie did you use the right lens, or was the sun in the wrong place, or did you shoot the whole set of images on the wrong ISO for example.

Also you need to be comparing your images to that of the ones that you have researched, ie other photographers work. Contrast and compare what you have done, what went right, what you struggled with and what you would do next time to improve you work.

                                                  Following

The gadget you need to add from the design area is the one called ‘Followers’. This will allow you to see who is following your work and also allow a direct link onto other blog sites within the group.

The way to add yourself to this system is to get their blog address so you can visit their site. Make sure that you are signed into your own site as well.
At the top left of everyone’s main site page is a follow button, just click and add yourself on.

The whole point of following is for you to start to communicate with each other and leave comments on each other’s photography in a constructive way. Under each blog entry is a comments box, and its here that you can leave your messages. It is a vital part of this course that you comment and critique each other’s work as you will learn from me and your fellow students as well.

When you have added yourself as a follower of someone’s blog the list of who you are following will appear in the ‘Blogs I’m Following’ part on your dashboard. You can click on the left hand side column where it lists all the blogs you follow, when you click here it will link you directly to other student’s blogs.

                                                 Recent Comments

Another useful gadget to add is the ‘Recent Comments’ gadget from the design layout.

The course you are on requires you to evidence everything you do, if I cant see it I cant mark it. Evidence is important as it needs to be captured to ensure what you did and when you did it. For example if I comment on your blog and give advice to improve your work or grade then the blogger will date and time when that advice was given and allow you to improve your work. So at the end of the course you cannot say that advice wasn’t given to allow you time to improve and target a higher grade.

Each time I sit with you to talk through your whole project, you will need to open a new blog entry and type the advice into your blog as soon as its given. This will ensure that we evidence all comments and advice live before they are forgotten. Also with a lot of students in this class and other groups as well on this system it becomes difficult to comment on everyone’s work on a regular basis so we need to remember to do this at all times.

A download version will be available from the Moodle site for which there is a link at the top of this website.
